Summary

Windhaven is a novel by George R. R. Martin and Lisa Tuttle. It is set on a planet ravaged by storms, haunted by sea monsters, where land is scattered thinly across a vast ocean. After a colony ship crashes, humans settle there and fashion wings from the wreckage's metal, using the planet's unusual gravity and dense atmosphere to fly. Society divides into two classes: the flyers, who possess wings and knowledge, and the islanders, who are bound to the islands and work as fishers and laborers. Flyer status is hereditary and cannot be crossed. Maris, a fisherman's daughter, was adopted as a child by a flyer and raised in a flyer household, and so the sky took deep hold of her. She longs to become a flyer but is barred by the rules because of her birth. Maris does not retreat; she publicly challenges the old tradition that wings may only be inherited and argues that flyers should be chosen by ability rather than bloodline. Her nonviolent campaign wins some supporters and angers those who benefit from the old order. As the rules are pried open and flight is gradually opened to islanders, the tide of social change proves fiercer and more complex than she expected: traditional authority collapses, a new order has yet to take shape, and rifts and conflict spread on every side. She parts ways with her former lover, grows estranged from her closest friend, and must maneuver between two hostile camps. In the end an accident takes away her ability to fly, yet through a lifetime of choices and responsibility she becomes a great and respected flyer. The novel is composed of several connected parts, including "The Storms of Windhaven," "One-Wing," and "The Fall," mirroring institutional change through individual fate, and combining romantic flight imagery with cool social observation.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
