The Veil, Volume 4

The Veil is a full-color slice-of-life romance manga by Japanese illustrator and manga artist Kotteri! (also known as Fukuda Ikumi). The Simplified Chinese edition is published by Hunan Fine Arts Publishing House, introduced by Tianwen Kadokawa. The story unfolds on streets with a retro urban atmosphere: Alexander, a young man on duty, happens upon Emma, a girl who uses a cane and has stepped out of her house alone. Blind since childhood, Emma has long been overprotected by her family and rarely leaves home; Alexander introduces her to a job as a telephone operator, and she takes her first step toward the outside world, while their relationship slowly warms through one conversation and encounter after another. The work does not rely on strong plotting but is built from small stand-alone vignettes, using restrained dialogue, subtle gestures, and negative space to depict the ambiguous "more than friends" distance between the two, interspersed with many full-color illustrations full of fashion sensibility. The linework is fluid and bold, the colors like an old film, and the author says she is strongly influenced by military uniforms, winter clothing, and twentieth-century fashion illustration. This volume is the fourth in the series, continuing the rhythm of Volume 3: the two spend more time together, and beyond everyday episodes there are also emotional friction and unease, as the boundary between them swings back and forth between closeness and withdrawal.
