Summary

Mirror Elegy is Huyan Yun's second full-length mystery novel, following his debut Transformation, published by Guangxi People's Publishing House in May 2010 and later revised and reissued as The Broken Mirror in New Star Press's Midnight Library·Original Series. The story begins with a "horror storytelling night" on a summer evening, as several young people sit around a bar taking turns telling scary stories—whoever makes another leave the table wins. The resident singer Xiao Qing tells a legend of "the mirror that kills": a wife conspires with her best friend to murder her husband, and the dead man's ghost breaks out of mirrors again and again until vengeance is complete. Fan Yifan and Yang Wei, present that night, are convinced the story is aimed at them; after an argument, Xiao Qing leaves. Yang Wei, unable to tell a story of her own, changes tack and calls her empty apartment in front of everyone—but someone answers the phone in a room that should be vacant. By the time the group rushes over, Yang Wei has been murdered, and the scene mirrors Xiao Qing's story exactly: a blade through the heart, blood everywhere, shattered mirror shards strewn across the floor. As investigator Lao Ma, reporter Guo Xiaofen, and others get involved, the case moves from an initial "probable suicide" to something far more complex, and the reasoner Huyan Yun enters the picture. The book revolves around a precious Western Han "light-transmitting mirror," drawing in the truths and falsehoods of the antiquities-collecting world and old grudges, and centers on the concept of "unreasonable crime"—a severe conflict between criminal intent and method of commission—to explore how people struggle under the fear of a "countdown to death." The work leans toward honkaku mystery, blending narrative trickery with forensic medicine and criminal investigation science; the atmosphere is eerie, and the ending preserves emotional warmth even as it reveals the truth.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
