Summary

"The Mirror and the Cup" is a poem composed in the Tang dynasty; its author is Bai Juyi.

Editor's review

"The Mirror and the Cup" is one of Bai Juyi's poems, and its title itself links an everyday object with reflections on human affairs. Bai Juyi's poetry is known for being plain and easy to understand, but the interest of this poem lies not in plainness but in its use of ordinary images to stir feeling, setting the wine in the cup beside the reflection in the mirror and drawing out observations on time, appearance, and state of mind. A reader who takes it merely as a short poem on things will easily miss its human depth; read within Bai Juyi's work as a whole, it reveals his light touch in handling everyday subjects. This edition, printed by Jinzhang Book Company, is short and suitable as material for close reading of a single poem rather than as a complete anthology for systematic study of Bai Juyi. When reading, one may first skip the notes and rely on feel for the relation between objects and feeling in the poem, then go back to check words and background. For readers who like short poems and are willing to linger over one poem, it will be a good sample for close reading.

FAQ

Is this poem suitable for beginners in classical poetry?
It can serve as introductory material, but some support is needed. Bai Juyi's language is relatively plain, and the short length makes repeated reading easy; however, this edition is limited in length and its notes may not be sufficient. Beginners would do best to read it alongside a reliable annotated selection of Tang and Song poetry, first resolving difficulties with words and then appreciating the objects and feeling in the poem.
How should the title "The Mirror and the Cup" be understood?
The title places the mirror and the cup side by side, prompting the reader to notice the relation between two everyday objects in the poem. The mirror reflects appearance, the cup holds wine, and both are connected with situations in which a person faces time and the self. How exactly they "exchange" or connect needs to be examined in the lines themselves, and one should not overinterpret from the title alone.
Can this printed edition be used for academic research?
It can be used as material for reading a single poem, but it is not suitable as a base text for academic research. It is short and lacks complete collation and detailed notes; researchers should consult authoritative edited and annotated editions. General readers who only want to read one poem closely need not judge it by academic standards.

About the author

Bai Juyi Author · Chinese

Bai Juyi (772–846), courtesy name Letian and styled Xiangshan Jushi, was born in Xinzheng, Henan, with ancestral roots in Taiyuan. A leading Tang dynasty realist poet, he championed the New Yuefu movement together with Yuan Zhen, and the two were known as "Yuan-Bai"; he is also paired with Liu Yuxi as "Liu-Bai." Bai Juyi served as a Hanlin academician and Left Remonstrator, among other posts. His wide-ranging work includes satirical poems on the hardships of ordinary people and long narrative and lyrical songs. Masterpieces such as "Song of Everlasting Sorrow," "Song of the Pipa," and "The Charcoal Seller" are noted for their plain, natural language and sincere feeling, and have exerted a lasting influence on later poetry. His Bai Shi Changqing Collection survives, and this library holds 77 of his works, including poems, prose collections, and verse groups such as Poems from Qin and Spring by the Xunyang River, commonly classed under ancient poetry, classic works, and inspirational growth.
