To repay the emperor's kindness in rescuing them, and to avoid the vortex of power in the capital, he resolutely journeys west into the sparsely populated and chaotic Western Regions, befriends the young woman Yuchi Zhuozhuo of the Yuchi clan, helps her family gain a foothold amid the strife of the various tribes, and step by step opens up territory, ultimately founding his own realm and allying with the Song against Western Xia, Tibet, Khotan, and other powers. The work takes "a drop of kindness should be repaid with a spring" as its spiritual core, and its protagonist combines a fox's cunning with a baseline of integrity; the book offers detailed descriptions of Song life—the streets and markets of Dongjing, festival customs, food and daily living—and uses fictional settings such as woolen textiles and new-style devices to imagine political maneuvering and economic reform. It is the author's third full-length novel in his Northern Song series.
