Summary

This collection of novellas and short stories brings together the most representative works of Pan Jun’s avant-garde fiction, including “Double Pupils,” “Southern Moods,” “Chronicle of the Wuxu Year,” and “Drifting Sands.” “Double Pupils” is narrated from Xiang Yu’s perspective; in the form of an inner monologue, it presents the major events of Xiang Yu’s life and the course of his inner journey. In “Southern Moods,” the protagonist goes to Blue Fort to write a novel but finds himself caught in a labyrinth in which everything seems to have been arranged in advance. After surviving one crisis after another, he finally realizes that because he has been too deeply absorbed, reality and the novel he is writing have overlapped, producing a series of bizarre stories. “Chronicle of the Wuxu Year” tells of an old man who has been in a coma for twelve years after a car accident and is about to awaken; the protagonist is hired at a high salary to play the role of the old man’s long-dead son, and absurd events ensue. “Drifting Sands” tells of a protagonist who is a writer and comes to a small island to write a novel, where he meets an old writer living in seclusion. In the course of his dealings with the old writer, the protagonist unexpectedly discovers that the content of his own novel is miraculously similar to the old writer’s experiences, as if the same person at different periods of time—who could not possibly exist simultaneously—were miraculously converging.

Editor's review

Double Pupil is a classic collection of novellas by Pan Jun, a leading figure of avant-garde literature, including such renowned pieces as "Double Pupil," "March 1st," "Drinking with Strangers," and "Gun, or the Chinese Box." Celebrated for its historical deconstruction and narrative experimentation, the book pushes literary imagination to astonishing heights. In the title piece "Double Pupil," the author retells the Chu-Han contention from the first-person perspective of Xiang Yu. "Double pupil" is not only Xiang Yu's physical trait but also an ingenious narrative metaphor: it symbolizes the subversion of a single definitive historical verdict and offers another way of seeing and interpreting history. With cold yet poetic language, Pan Jun fuses grand historical tragedy with delicate psychological analysis, exploring the nature of fate, memory, and narrative power amid the interplay of fact and fiction. The structure of the whole collection is intricate as a labyrinth, the language highly dense, carrying both the flavor of traditional storytelling and the philosophical speculation of modern fiction. Reading this book is not only reading a story but experiencing a narrative adventure and a profound reflection on historical certainty. For literature lovers, it is an intellectual and aesthetic challenge not to be missed.

About the author

潘军 Author

Pan Jun is an author about whom limited public information is available. Nine of the author's works are held in the collection, spanning social fiction, management communication and medicine, which suggests a fairly broad range of interests. The fiction is represented by works such as The Death Penalty Report, Monologue and Gesture: Red, Monologue and Gesture: Blue, Monologue and Gesture: White, Wind, Double Pupil and Haikou Diary. These works tend to focus on real social issues and individual circumstances, with a reflective and introspective quality; the Monologue and Gesture volumes, divided by colour, show a serial and somewhat experimental structure. Excellent Management Communication addresses management practice, indicating that the author's writing is not confined to fiction. As details of the author's life, nationality and dates remain unknown, this introduction is based solely on the works in the collection and makes no biographical inferences.
