Series
A forgotten little Marvel hero who nonetheless gets a genuinely sincere coming-of-age story. McKeever and Norton pull the lens back to the "fights + soap opera + daily life" rhythm of 1980s Amazing Spider-Man: the protagonist fails exams, gets dumped for being late to dates, and botches his first match. Norton's linework is clean and crisp, and the action sequences read very smoothly. For readers used to cosmic-scale events, this short, tightly wound limited series is like a glass of clear water—suited to those completing the Marvel B- and C-list roster, or simply wanting a story about a rookie hero's first fall.

Summary

Gravity Hero is a five-issue limited series launched by Marvel in 2005, created by writer Sean McKeever and artist Mike Norton and part of the "Marvel Next" line aimed at younger readers. The protagonist, Greg Willis, was born and raised in Sheboygan, Wisconsin; the summer after graduating high school, he is caught in a bizarre storm and whirlpool aboard his family's yacht and afterward discovers he can control the gravity of himself and surrounding matter. Chasing the dream of being a "big-city superhero," he comes to New York, enrolls at New York University, and takes the hero name Gravity Hero. Reality, however, is far from smooth: on his first mission he mistakes a hero for a villain and lets the real criminal, Black Death, escape; he then takes a beating from seasoned villains such as Rhino and Shocker. Through setbacks and self-doubt he makes new friends, Lauren and "Frog," and gradually learns to live with a double identity. This volume is the fifth in the series, the final issue of the five-part run, in which the foreshadowing planted earlier all erupts at once; Greg must face not only enemies but the very theme of "the gap between dreams and reality."

Editor's review

Who it's for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
