Readers of Tian Dao often go back to the original novel, because the TV series takes away the dialogue but not the long passages of speculation in the book. The real weight of The Distant Savior lies not in romance or business warfare but in the way it turns an abstract question—why people are poor, why they are always waiting for a savior—into a tangible story: a village, a set of audio equipment, a head-on clash with an industry giant. Dou Dou's writing is "cold," almost never lyricizing on behalf of her characters, leaving every judgment to dialogue and outcomes, so that the middle feels like watching a coolly calculated business deduction, and only in the second half does one realize that the deduction is aimed at the human heart. Its controversies are equally obvious: the near-demigod intelligence of the characters and the strong judgments about "cultural attributes" are easy to criticize as preaching. Yet it is precisely these unpolished aspects that have kept people discussing it for twenty years.
