The Daoist Disciple

Summary
Dao Men Sheng is a long classical xianxia novel by Mo Ma Gongzi, serialized on Qidian from 2016 to 2021. It runs to roughly 5.79 million characters across more than 1,900 chapters. The story opens in the Southern Edge Commandery of the fictional Dayu Dynasty. As a boy, Dongfang Mo makes his living wandering the jianghu with an old Daoist. After the old man dies, he survives by storytelling and petty swindling: on the streets he spins tales of immortal eccentrics like the Ghost-Handed Scholar and the True Man of the Spirit Gourd while peddling the Linggen Precious Mirror, all the while secretly dreaming of cultivation. In an accident he inadvertently kills a medicinal blood beast and swallows its congealed blood pearl; pursued by a girl in red, he falls into a bottomless ravine. There, sleeping on drift ice over a subterranean river, he absorbs spirit essence into his body and uses a family-heirloom technique to open all his meridians, truly crossing the threshold of cultivation. He later passes the formation trial of the Taiyi Dao Palace and begins at the first layer of Qi Refining, learning spells, forging his life-bound artifact, fighting on the martial arena, and battling for treasures in grotto-heavens and blessed lands. His journey takes him through the Blood Clan lands, the human Eastern Domain, star-domain conflicts, the Qingling Dao Sect, foreign territories, a great Buddhist convocation, a war of entire clans, and the Eighteen Hells, until he touches the very source of the Three Pure Ones. The novel follows an honest, down-to-earth mortal-path approach: the protagonist has mediocre spiritual roots, no system cheat, and no wise old mentor to guide him. He climbs by his wits, his character, and repeated brushes with death. He is no upright hero—he schemes, holds grudges, and looks out for his own interests—and the author warns outright in the synopsis that the protagonist is no gentleman and readers should enter with caution. The prose is cold and steely with a vein of black humor; the pacing is slow and the payoffs restrained, but the book excels at three-dimensional characters, solid fight scenes, and long-range foreshadowing that pays off.
Editor's review
Who it's for
A good fit for
Not a good fit for
Reading tips
