About the author
Fan Shanbiao: publicly available information is limited, and no complete biographical details can be verified. Judging from the one work held in the library, his research and writing center on the relationship between Hong Kong literature and newspaper supplements. His representative work, Listening to Miscellaneous Voices: Newspaper Supplements and the Production of Hong Kong Literature (1930s–1960s), is included in the Academic Library of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The author turns his attention to newspaper supplements of the 1930s to 1960s, treating their writing—long regarded as marginal, scattered, and hard to retrieve—as an object of study, and examines from the perspective of literary production how supplements took part in the making and circulation of Hong Kong literature. This kind of research values the discovery and close reading of historical sources and attends to neglected voices beyond mainstream literary narratives, reflecting solid documentary work and a calm scholarly attitude. The work is commonly classified under literary appreciation and is suitable for readers interested in the history of Hong Kong literature, newspaper and periodical studies, and sources for modern literary history.
