The Extraordinary Legend

Mention Xiao Qian and one can hardly avoid Piao Miao Zhi Lü—the work that, alongside Zhu Xian and The Legend of a Small Soldier, is called one of the "three great wonders of the web," that built the cultivation-realm system later adopted by countless novels, and that earned him the title "founding father of xianxia." The Extraordinary Legend is his long-form return to the xianxia genre after more than a decade, deliberately serialized on Qidian, and for old readers it comes with a built-in sense of nostalgia. What is most worth reading here is the setup: Xiao Qian does not repeat his earlier work but builds a new framework, the "Dao-Yan Contention"—Daoist qi refinement, treasures, and Yanxiu true words and Buddhist treasures stand as two parallel lineages, and the protagonist happens to take the path of dual Dao-Yan cultivation, making a living among sects through alchemy rather than pure slaughter. Add a vision stretching from sects to the stars, and it still reads with that old-school xianxia grand scale. A caveat: the author's approach is traditional and the pace slow, there was a long hiatus in the middle, and subscriptions only reached the "large premium" line, so reception is sharply polarized: readers who love old-school xianxia and value character and setup find it rewarding, while those seeking maximum wish-fulfillment and fast pacing may find it dragging. If you have read Piao Miao Zhi Lü and can accept its slow burn, this book is worth settling down to read for a good stretch.
