Web of Spies is a military espionage novel by the online author The Nation of Deep Blue, serialized on Qidian and completed on June 13, 2022, spanning roughly 2.7 million Chinese characters across 1,294 chapters. Set in occupied Shanghai in 1939, it follows Chen Mingxiang, a seemingly inconsequential translator in a Japanese intelligence agency who is in fact a double agent serving both the Kuomintang's Bureau of Investigation and Statistics and the Chinese Communist underground, under the code names Bluebird and Deep Sea. The plot unfolds through threads including assassination operations against collaborators, the entrapment of a major-general-level agent, a gold heist, a salt industry war, and network-building in the north. The protagonist rarely relies on marksmanship or martial prowess, instead weakening Japanese logistics and supporting the resistance through business acumen, relationship-building, and economic maneuvering—earning the work the label of an "atypical spy thriller." The novel devotes considerable attention to the relationships among the various factions of the Republican era and to the financial and pricing systems of the time, while its depiction of local customs and social environment carries a strong period flavor. The main storyline is clear, the foreshadowing dense, and the reversals frequent. The ending wraps up rather quickly, making it a subject of considerable reader discussion.
