Summary

The Awakeners is a linked short story collection by Keigo Higashino, published in 2025. The original Japanese title, Black Showman and the Awakening Women, was translated by Zhu Wenxi and published by Nanhai Publishing Company in March 2025. The book revolves around a small bar called TRAP HAND in Ebisu, Tokyo. The owner, Takefumi Kamio, is a former magician, a man of ambiguous morals who appears greedy but is in fact adept at using observation and small "tricks" to dissect human nature. His niece Mayo works at a real estate renovation company and often brings clients or friends to the bar for a drink, casually carrying one troublesome matter after another to the counter.

The visitors are almost all women: a daughter burdened by parasitic relatives, a friend worried about a love-struck bestie, a mother hesitating over a posthumous child, a daughter-in-law longing to escape her controlling mother-in-law, and a bride-to-be torn between "marrying easy" and "chasing a dream the hard way." They are labeled "someone's daughter," "someone's lover," "someone's wife," yet refuse to be mere victims in the conflicts around them. Kamio, with a magician's staging and rhetoric, helps them see through the lies and calculations surrounding them and returns the power of choice to their own hands.

The book is composed of sections including "The Innovator," "The Illusionist," "The Expectant," "The Heir," and "The Examiner." The characters and clues in each story interconnect, finally converging into a continuous chain of reversals. The work continues Higashino's signature "everyday mystery" approach. The suspense is not intense; the focus falls on women's circumstances, kinship ties, and self-awakening.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
