Summary

Blood Music is a representative work by the American hard science fiction writer Greg Bear. It began as a novella of the same name, which won the 1984 Hugo Award for Best Novelette and was later expanded into a novel that received a 1987 Nebula Award nomination for Best Novel. The story takes place at a California biotech company called Enzyme Valley: genetic engineering expert Virgil Ulam, in violation of regulations, uses the company's laboratory equipment to cultivate a tiny intelligent life form. Just as the research is about to succeed, the company discovers his violation, dismisses him, and orders him to destroy all results. Virgil, convinced this is an unprecedented breakthrough, secretly keeps samples, injects them into his own blood, and carries them out of the laboratory; he sees himself as the "mother" of these tiny lives and believes he has a responsibility to protect them. He does not know that these inconspicuous "thought cells" will rapidly evolve and spread within his body, ultimately transforming humanity and the entire world, even challenging people's understanding of life, consciousness, and the order of the universe. The novel version adds threads and multiple character perspectives not covered in the novella, blending solid molecular biology premises with 1980s New Wave literary technique, and is regarded as one of the earliest science fiction novels built around nanotechnology/artificial intelligent cells.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
