Summary

Blood and Sand chronicles the life of a bullfighter. Gallardo is the son of a drunken shoemaker; his mother, Doña Angustias (a name meaning "sorrows and troubles"), earns a little extra by working as a servant. It is a poor family. The boy's father dies early, and to make a living his mother apprentices him to the best shoemaker she can find, but he is stubborn by nature and single-mindedly determined to become a bullfighter, obsessed with the ring to the point that even his mother's beatings cannot make him obey. In the end, after countless hardships and death-defying struggles, he becomes a bullfighter famed throughout the Iberian Peninsula; every season contracts fly to him like snowflakes, money pours in, he acquires houses and estates and enters high society, and even the niece of a marquis is willing to be his lover. To him the bullring is an ocean of cheers and applause; people of every social class look up to him, and he gives generously to the poor, seeming to be their savior. His agent even proudly calls him "the world's foremost bullfighter" or "the first bullfighter in the world." But the law that things reverse when they reach an extreme and decline when they peak spares him no more than anyone else: this glorious time does not last long. One afternoon his bullfighting fails, and from then on he never recovers, going steadily downhill; the "world's foremost bullfighter" of the ring becomes a coward afraid to face the bull, cheers and applause turn into mockery and jeers, his noble lover abandons him without mercy, he is in debt, his spirits are crushed, and at last, after recovering from a severe injury, he tries to rally his former glory only to die a wretched death.

Editor's review

Blood and Sand is the masterpiece of the Spanish writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, published in 1908 and the peak of his naturalist creation. Far from a mere novel about bullfighting, it uses the tragic story of the poor young Juan Gallardo—son of a shoemaker who becomes a bullfighting star and is finally destroyed in the world of fame and fortune—to dissect the multiple deep-seated ills of Spanish society. With a cold, precise touch the author depicts the blood, glory, fervor, and hypocrisy interwoven inside and outside the bullring, tightly fusing individual destiny with social criticism. Gallardo's figure is both a product of a particular era and a reflection of the vanity, fragility, and craving for recognition common to human nature. Ibáñez's rich early political activity and years of exile give his work a strong concern for reality and social insight, enabling Blood and Sand to transcend the limits of region and era and become a profound parable exploring the price of success, social alienation, and the essence of human nature. Reading this book, one not only takes in a vivid panorama of Spain's golden age but also feels the author's sharp lashing of an unjust society and his deep compassion for the fate of those at the bottom, and its literary value and intellectual depth only grow fresher with time.
