Summary

The Medicine God is a long-form Eastern fantasy novel by the web novelist Jingye Jisi. It began serialization on Qidian around 2014 and was completed at the end of 2015, running to roughly one thousand chapters and more than three million characters. The protagonist, Mu Xian, was in his previous life the youngest and most brilliant alchemist of the Danding Sect. Betrayed and killed by his most trusted senior brother, he wakes to find himself roughly twenty thousand years in the past, in an age when the martial way lay barren, inhabiting the body of the young master of the Mu family in Shitang Town, Yunmen Commandery. His new identity is even more ill-fated: born with severed meridians too fragile to gather qi, he is all but incapable of cultivation. His father, Mu Yuanshan, risks offending his own sect and plunging into danger to prolong his son's life, while family infighting and enemies closing in follow close behind. Mu Xian's only capital is the pharmacological knowledge and lost pill formulas in his mind, twenty thousand years ahead of this era. Starting as the family's sickly good-for-nothing, he survives and strikes back in desperate straits by identifying herbs, compounding medicines, and refining pills, trading elixirs for resources, clearing his meridians, and rewriting the fate that barred him from cultivation. He is then drawn into the conflicts of clans, sects, dynasties, and powers beyond, breaking through realm after realm amid constant face-slapping and bloodshed, until he rises to rule a domain of his own. Built around medicine as its core conceit, the book fuses alchemy and traditional pharmacology with a fantasy cultivation system. Its pacing leans on relentless leveling and cathartic payoffs, making it a typical early Qidian transmigration alchemy-and-martial-arts power fantasy.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ

About the author

Author

Public information about Jingye Jisi is limited; all that is known is that the author has one work to their name, Only as Far as Litang, which is classified as prose and miscellaneous writings. From this slender clue, the writing appears to lean toward the personal essay, with its length and subject matter likely centering on the author's observations and inner feelings. The place name Litang readily evokes the landscapes and travel experiences of the western Sichuan plateau, while the words "only as far as" in the title suggest a sense of stopping, looking back, or something left unfinished. The author thus seems less concerned with grand narrative than with recording, in a light and relaxed tone, fragments and moods gathered along the way. Because no records of the author's life, identity, or body of work are available, it is impossible to judge the overall character or reach of their writing; readers can presently approach the author's style only through this single work.
