Summary

Sight of the Back is a selection of Zhu Ziqing's essays. Zhu Ziqing set extremely high standards for his writing, composing at most five hundred characters a day. His essays are plain yet quietly warm, delicate without losing frankness, capturing the full flavor of life between the popular and the elegant, and he is recognized as a model of 'beautiful vernacular prose.' As a great master of the essay, Zhu Ziqing's fine works extend far beyond Sight of the Back, Moonlight over the Lotus Pond, Spring, Green, and Rush: the clear and delicate Lantern Lights and Oar Songs on the Qinhuai River, the sincere and moving To My Deceased Wife, the tranquil and warm Winter, the poetic Notes on Travels in Europe, the trenchant On Smoking, the witty On Affectation, and the humorous Women all present a richly varied Zhu Ziqing and perfectly embody the beauty of the essay.

Editor's review

As a classic of Zhu Ziqing's prose, Back View is published here by Hunan Literature and Art Publishing House in a complete edition with elegant binding. The book has held a steady Douban rating above 8.5, ample evidence of its literary appeal across the generations. Zhu Ziqing excels at plain description, and his feeling is sincere yet restrained; pieces such as "Back View," "Hurry," and "Moonlight over the Lotus Pond" have become models of modern Chinese prose. This edition includes not only his most widely read lyrical masterpieces but also fine examples of portrait and narrative writing, and its overall arrangement gives a good picture of the full range of his prose.

From an editor's perspective, the book's value lies in the "cleanliness" of its language and the "universality" of its feeling. Zhu's prose is polished and precise, almost free of redundant ornament, and behind that simplicity lies a deep command of Chinese. His depictions of a father's back, of time slipping away, of a lotus pond in moonlight, resonate with generation after generation because he captures universal emotional cores: attachment to family, melancholy at the transience of time, quiet contemplation of natural beauty. In an age of information overload and increasingly inflated expression, rereading these texts lets us rediscover the distilled beauty of Chinese and the restrained power of emotional expression.

This edition selects commonly read pieces and is very well suited as an introduction to Zhu Ziqing's prose. For readers who wish to improve their feel for Chinese and learn how to express deep feeling in plain language, it is an excellent model. It offers no thrilling plot; instead it leads readers to see true feeling in small things and savor flavor in the ordinary.
