Summary

The Song of Roland is the masterpiece of the medieval French heroic epic known as the chanson de geste. Composed around the eleventh century by an unknown author, it is one of the oldest surviving works of French literature and, together with Beowulf and the Nibelungenlied, ranks among the major heroic epics of medieval Europe. The poem is based on the historical event of 778, when Charlemagne campaigned in Spain and his rearguard was ambushed at Roncevaux (called the valley of Ronceval in the epic). After more than a century of oral performance and elaboration by minstrels, it became the story of Charlemagne, emperor of the Franks, campaigning in Spain for seven years while King Marsile holds out in Zaragoza and sends envoys to feign surrender; the peer Ganelon, harboring a grudge over an insult, plots with the enemy and betrays his stepson Roland, so that Roland, Oliver and twelve peers lead the rearguard into an ambush and are overwhelmed and annihilated; Roland sounds his horn to summon help and dies a heroic death. Charlemagne returns, destroys the enemy and takes revenge, and has the traitor Ganelon executed. Written in ten-syllable lines with interwoven assonance and alliteration, the epic has a ringing, plain, forceful rhythm; it celebrates courage, loyalty and feudal obligation while also presenting the conflict between the Christian and pagan worlds, between two civilizations, in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This edition is translated by Ma Zhencheng, a translator of French literature and winner of the first Fu Lei Translation and Publishing Award, and appears in the World Heroic Epic Translation Series.

Editor's review

Reading tips

  1. 先通读一遍把握主线,再回头看加纳隆出场和罗兰吹号角两处,体会伏笔与情绪转折。
  2. 留意重复出现的场景与套语,这是口传史诗的表演痕迹,不建议当作冗余跳读。
  3. 可参阅牛津抄本与通行版本差异的说明,或与杨宪益中译本对读,感受两种译笔。
  4. 读时可随手查阅龙塞沃战役、查理大帝与西班牙边区的地理人情背景,理解会更立体。

FAQ

About the author

Anonymous Author

Anonymous is not a real personal name but a general Chinese designation for authors whose names are unknown, lost, or unsigned. Neither nationality nor dates of birth and death can be verified, and available public information is limited, so the works attributed to this name are the only basis for description. The collection holds 2,078 works under Anonymous, spanning medicine, classics, historical readings, ancient poetry, classical literature, and philosophy. Representative works include The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon: Lingshu, Mencius, The Book of Documents, Nineteen Old Poems, Complete Song Ci, and The Peacock Flies Southeast. Most of these works took shape through long transmission and editing, emerging either from collective folk creation or from authors whose names were lost over time. In ancient China, the Book of Songs, the Great Learning, and many popular storybooks and plays were signed Anonymous because their authors could not be traced. Anonymous works cross the classics, histories, philosophical writings, medical texts, and poetry; their subjects are broad, and their styles vary from archaic simplicity to clear naturalness, making them important and influential sources for understanding ancient Chinese thought, medicine, and literature.
