This issue is the #0 special released during DC's "New 52" reboot for "Zero Month," written by Judd Winick and illustrated by Freddie Williams II, telling the story of Oliver Queen before he became Green Arrow. The story flashes back several years: nineteen-year-old Oliver is sent by his father to a Quinn Industries offshore oil rig for "seasoning," but behind his father's back he gathers friends for a party on the platform, accompanied by his girlfriend Leena and his best friend Tommy Merlyn. A group of armed men led by "Iron Eagle" seizes the opportunity to board the rig and steal crude oil, initially only taking control of the personnel without intending to hurt anyone. Eager to prove himself, Oliver grabs a bow and arrow and tries to shoot the detonator from the enemy's hand, but the device slips and ricochets back onto the platform, triggering a violent explosion that leaves numerous guests dead and injured, kills Leena, and severely wounds Tommy. Oliver is thrown into the sea by the blast and drifts to a deserted island, where he survives by hunting with bow and arrow, tempering his mind and honing his skills, before eventually returning to Seattle to become Green Arrow. This issue also reveals how he first met Roy Harper (later Arsenal) and plants the seeds for Tommy's eventual turn to the opposing side. The entire book unfolds in Oliver's first-person narration, echoing the atmosphere of the first season of the CW series Arrow, making it an essential issue for understanding the New 52 Green Arrow's origin and the foundations of his character.
