Enchantment

Enchantment is a full-length urban novel by the Hong Kong writer Yi Shu, blending romance with a surreal, science-fictional tinge. The heroine, Bai Ruying, survives a car accident but gains a "conductive power" ordinary people lack: she can sense events before they happen and make nearby objects move or fly on their own. This sudden gift brings no convenience; it first drives away her fiancé, Sun Jingcheng—a doctor devoted to science and logic who, faced with the inexplicable, chooses to leave without a word. Bai Ruying then meets Lin Zhenchuan. A kindly man curious about and tolerant of things beyond ordinary explanation, Lin covers for his old classmate while helping Bai Ruying gradually understand the source and limits of her power. Alongside this come family suspicion, others' covetousness, and an unspoken loneliness: can a woman who is "different" still be loved as an ordinary person? This question recurs throughout the book. Wrapped in a suspenseful, fantastical shell, the story is still classic Yi Shu—urban women weighing love against selfhood, in a cool, restrained voice.
