Summary

Peerless Sword Dao is an Eastern fantasy novel by the author Fire Burns the World. It began serializing online in 2013 and was completed in 2015, totaling 896 chapters and roughly 2.09 million Chinese characters. It has since spawned adaptations including an audiobook. The story is set in the Retro Calendar era after the Great Catastrophe: monstrous beasts run rampant, human civilization has declined, and survivors have retreated behind city walls. Outside the walls lies wilderness roamed by beasts; inside, a fragile order is maintained by credit points and law enforcement squads, and martial arts have once again become the foundation of survival. The protagonist, Ye Chen, lost both parents in childhood and depends on his younger sister Ye Xue, who suffers from a cold illness. He hunts monstrous beasts for credit points, solely to spare his sister some of her suffering; rejected by sect gates because he cannot pay the entrance fee, he hones an extraordinary survival instinct on the edge of death out of his determination to protect her. Old Hu, the librarian of Star City Library, is in truth a deeply concealed master and a guide on Ye Chen's path of cultivation; when Ye Chen is gravely wounded and near death, Old Hu guides him to practice the Sword Transformation Art from a mysterious black book—a domineering and perilous technique that nourishes the body with the sword, feeds the sword with blood, and transforms the body into the sword, requiring its practitioner to endure near-fatal agony before achieving mastery. The main storyline begins with the struggle for survival in Star City. Ye Chen rises to prominence through conflicts with Su Hao, young master of the Su family, and others in the underground arena, then passes through the Sword Domain trials, the nationwide martial selection, and sect wars, gradually establishing the Xuantian Sect. The stakes later escalate into a war of survival against the invasion of the demon realm and the scourge of soul-devouring bugs. Ye Chen battles for years in the Sea of Soul Demons, breaks through to the Supremacy realm, and ultimately steps onto the Seven-Color Rainbow Bridge into the Primordial Space, inheriting the sword sovereign's duty of guardianship. Centered on the idea that the sword dao is the dao of guardianship, the book binds the sharpness of swordsmanship tightly to the choice to protect people and the dao. Its realm system is clear and its combat scenes dense—a typical power-fantasy of sword cultivator growth. Note that Fire Burns the World is the author's pen name and is often mistaken for part of the book's title; the official title is Peerless Sword Dao, and there is no subtitle Peerless Sword Dao: Fire Burns the World.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips
