Ultimate Extinction is the final chapter of the "Galactus Trilogy" in Marvel's Ultimate Universe, written by Warren Ellis and drawn by Brandon Peterson. The original Ultimate Extinction ran for five issues in 2006. The story follows Ultimate Nightmare and Ultimate Secret: a vast entity called Gah Lak Tus is approaching Earth. It is not the cosmic giant in purple armor wielding a planet-sized scepter familiar from tradition, but a swarm of metallic mechanical beings sharing a collective consciousness, devouring planet after planet like a plague. S.H.I.E.L.D. and the world's heroes must find a response before a countdown of only days runs out. Nick Fury assembles the Ultimates, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men to act on separate fronts: Professor X and Jean Grey use an amplified Cerebro to attempt psychic contact with the cold swarm consciousness, only to provoke it; Reed Richards secretly builds a weapon in the Nevada desert powerful enough to shake the universe, while fearing the consequences of using it. Meanwhile, private detective Misty Knight, investigating disappearances, stumbles upon a cult that uses religion as a cover to persuade people to volunteer for death, backed by the Silver Surfer-like herald and a clone army of bald priestesses. An atmosphere of doom, science-fictional speculation, and a cast of heroes intertwine to form a dark parable about how humanity faces an incomprehensible threat.
