Summary

The Ultimate Teacher is an urban campus novel written by web novelist Liu Xiahui in 2014. It was serialized on Zongheng Chinese Network from March 20, 2014, and completed on November 3, 2015, with 858 chapters and about 2.7 million characters; it is the author's last purely urban work before turning to fantasy. The protagonist, Fang Yan, comes from a Taiji family. Unable to bear the annual "duel" and violent treatment from his childhood sweetheart Ye Wenrou, he runs away from home, gives up martial arts for letters, and goes to the private Zhuque High School in Huacheng to become a high school Chinese teacher. The first, second, and third rules of Zhuque High School are all "no teacher-student romance," and this young teacher, full of martial arts and foul-mouthed, lands right in a love triangle involving a beautiful principal, a stunning school beauty, and two childhood sweethearts. The story centers on campus daily life: Fang Yan teaches Chinese classics and Taiji in a bantering way, turning the classroom into his stage and leading a group of students labeled "poor students" out of their respective predicaments; outside campus, forces such as the Ye family of Yanzihu, the Qin family of Yanjing, and the Jiang family appear in turn, with martial grudges, business games, and emotional entanglements layered on top, as Fang Yan grows amid laughter and danger into the "legendary teacher" people speak of. The work writes traditional culture and martial arts spirit in a light, humorous tone and is one of the representative "teacher genre" urban campus works of the 2010s; it was adapted into a web drama of the same name in 2015.

Editor's review

About the author

Author

Liu Xiahui is a Chinese web novelist known for urban-themed fiction. Public information about him is limited, and reliable sources have yet to record details such as his birthplace, education, or writing career. Judging from the four works included in the collection, his writing centers on two categories: social fiction and time-travel/alternate-world fiction. The Genius Doctor revolves around a medical practitioner and carries a clear professional flavor, while Ni Lin and Hot Star: The Superstar Who Walked Out of Prison lean toward urban legend, often following characters who rise from marginal circumstances. His plots move at a brisk pace, with concentrated conflict, and he is skilled at using identity contrasts and come-from-behind reversals to create narrative tension. Overall, Liu Xiahui's works stay close to contemporary urban life, combining genre-driven excitement with a measure of social observation, and suit readers who prefer light, fluid storytelling.
