Summary

Paper God is an urban supernatural novel by Qidian author Jun Bujian. It was serialized from October 2006 to June 2008, spanning 589 chapters and roughly 1.77 million Chinese characters. The title refers both to the protagonist's power and to the saying that runs through the book: paper is the lightest yet heaviest thing in the world.

The story follows a young man named Ren Qianyou, who can manipulate paper. He can harden an ordinary sheet into a blade, fold it into wings and fly, and use it as a medium for all kinds of techniques, making him something like a "paper-wielding Taoist." After he picks up a mysterious man in black from the neighboring courtyard, he is drawn into a conflict between superpowered individuals. From then on, everyone around him is either a superhuman or a martial arts master, and layer upon layer of intrigue unfolds.

The novel's main appeal is its system of powers. Abilities in the book are not simply stacked in tiers; they check and counter one another, each with its own logic. Characters such as Jintie, Xiaoqi, Xiaoyu, the Man in Black, the Man in White, and Fire Fist each wield a distinct power, while top-tier abilities like the Undying, the Reader-Writer, the Divine Armorer, and the Great Prophet form a complete worldview. The author also includes supplementary materials such as a list of characters and their abilities and a roster and design notes for divine weapons. The book closes with "Rain of Sunshine," whose epilogue is titled "Rain of Paper Cranes."

As the author's debut, the writing carries the rawness and sincerity typical of early web fiction. It avoids the formulaic face-slapping that became common later and stands out for its inventive premise and solid pacing. Among urban supernatural novels, it is a "system-building" work often remembered by veteran readers.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
