Summary

The Red Tassel Chronicles is a long-running wuxia-MMORPG online novel by web author Dongjiao Lin Gongzi, serialized on Qidian and now complete at roughly 3.37 million Chinese characters and over a thousand chapters. Set in a virtual wuxia game that fuses the worlds of Jin Yong, Gu Long, Liang Yusheng, Wen Rui'an, Huang Yi and other masters of the genre, its timeline begins about sixteen years after the original stories end. As a result the book rarely retreads the originals' main plots; instead it dramatizes what happened "afterwards" to those classic characters: Linghu Chong and Ren Yingying's married life, Yinggu's dealings with the Old Urchin and Yideng, the revelation that Dongfang Bubai never truly died, Li Xunhuan and Sun Xiaohong's twilight years, the cliff-fallen Qiao Feng and the mad Murong Gongzi, and more. The protagonist is "Hard-Luck Ah Fei," a player dragged into the game by a friend. He only meant to make up the numbers for a quest, but stumbles into the jianghu, joins the Spear Sect of the Demon Mountain School, and roams the world with a single red-tasseled spear, rising from green novice to master. He acts on impulse and personal whim, with no ambition to conquer the martial world—he just wants to roam and enjoy the jianghu with a few good friends. The main thread follows Dongfang Bubai's return and his bid for dominance, with Ah Fei and his friends encountering team expeditions, sect quests, arena bouts, assassinations and counterattacks, meeting, befriending or feuding with many familiar wuxia figures. The work's most distinctive feature is transplanting the techniques of traditional wuxia into an online-game framework: the early chapters still keep gamified stats such as levels, attributes and internal-energy values, but after several dozen chapters the author shifts to fuzzier wuxia-style descriptions like "X-tenths internal energy" and "martial realm," so the book reads increasingly like a modern wuxia novel rather than a numbers-driven VRMMO story. The narrative is light and comic, warm in tone, with flesh-and-blood characters—no harem, no stud protagonist, and no invincible-hero formula; adventures abound but never break the world. In fan-fiction fashion the author gives many original characters fairly happy endings, and many readers regard it as a warm-hearted work that "makes up for regrets." The author later wrote a sequel, The Red Hare Chronicles, set in Huang Yi's wuxia universe.

Editor's review
