Red Wolf Vol. 5

This is Vol. 5 of the Red Wolf series, continuing from Marvel's 2015 "All-New, All-Different" line. Red Wolf was originally a Cheyenne sheriff in Timely, a Western town in the Battleworld tie-in 1872, keeping the peace after taking the badge of the murdered sheriff Steve Rogers; in a battle with the Surveyor he was hurled into the modern world, landing in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, with no identity and no law-enforcement authority, yet still helping the local police with cases. In this volume, Red Wolf and Deputy Sheriff Ortiz track the villain Rattlesnake to his rocky hideout; once surveillance turns into open conflict, whether he can withstand a hit from the villain's serpent weapons becomes the suspense—and a man from another era can hardly evade for long the interdimensional enemy determined to kill him. Writer Nathan Edmondson blends the desolate texture of the Western with the rhythm of police procedural investigation, having Red Wolf solve problems through tracking, fists, and improvisation rather than gunfights; artist Dalibor Talajić uses large areas of negative space to create images with a tribal feel, and Jeffrey Veregge's cover designs add distinctiveness to the series.
