Summary

Adapted from the classic film Red Sun, this is a picture-book retelling.

The story is set during the War of Liberation. In the winter of 1946, the Kuomintang's Reorganized 74th Division launched a frenzied attack on Lianshui in the Northern Jiangsu Liberated Area, and our forces under Xi Zhenxin and Ding Yuanshan fought back heroically. After inflicting heavy losses on the enemy, our army withdrew north to coordinate with the larger East China campaign, luring the 74th Division to the Menglianggu area of the Yimeng Mountains. With the 58th Regiment as the main force and supported by brother units, through the two great campaigns of Laiwu and Menglianggu, the Kuomintang's Reorganized 74th Division was completely wiped out. From then on, on the East China battlefield, our People's Liberation Army shifted from strategic defense to strategic offense, moving from victory to greater victory and laying the foundation for the liberation of all China.

Editor's review

As a classic revolutionary historical novel, Red Sun draws on real campaigns fought on the Shandong battlefield during the War of Liberation, artistically recreating that epic chapter of history. This edition, published by China Democracy and Legal System Publishing House and compiled by Yan Kai, is faithful to the spirit of the original while being reorganized and presented in a form better suited to contemporary readers. Its value lies not only in the power of the literary work but also in the historical memory and spiritual strength it carries. Through vivid military figures such as Shen Zhenxin and Liang Bo, the novel deeply interprets ideals and beliefs, the spirit of sacrifice, and revolutionary heroism; its narrative is grand yet attentive to detail, its emotion sincere and powerful. For today's readers, Red Sun is a spiritual dialogue across the mists of history, helping us understand where the republic came from and perceive our forebears' struggles and sacrifices.
