Summary

Ruins of Qin is the inaugural V1.0 work of the "Wanggu Mythology" worldview. This system was jointly built by authors including Langliu de Hama, Ma Boyong, Yue Guan, Tiaowu, and Tianshi Aosika, using parallel branches such as the "Twelve Mythological Epochs" and "Three Thousand Legendary Worlds" to recombine ancient Chinese mythology with real history. Yue Guan's work is set in the early years of the Qin dynasty: Meng Tian's army, ordered by the First Emperor to expand the frontier, encounters monster attacks at Yunmeng Marsh. The young soldier Yang Jin, skilled in Mohist mechanical arts, routs the creatures with his mechanisms and thus comes to the emperor's notice, being summoned to court to oversee the casting of the Twelve Golden Men. Also serving at court are Han Yu, who calls himself a "Wanqu man" and arrived on an extraterrestrial vessel, and the alchemist Xu Fu, whose arts are godlike. Subsequently, a monstrous army presses on the frontier, mutated creatures appear in Xianyang, and the casting grounds suffer mysterious attacks; seemingly isolated events gradually connect into a hidden thread pointing to the foundations of Qin. Xu Fu and Han Yu each harbor their own origins—one tied to genetic civilization, the other representing mechanical civilization—and Yang Jin is pushed into the position of the "Chosen One." The author applies his customary skill in historical narrative, linking Qin institutions, military ranks, alchemists, and mechanical arts with novel science-fiction premises, history first and fantasy second, rewriting such historical mysteries as the First Emperor's encounter with extraterrestrial visitors, the casting of the Twelve Golden Men, and Xu Fu's sea voyage in search of immortals.

Editor's review
