Summary

Akihabara@DEEP is an urban youth novel by the Japanese author Ira Ishida, following his Ikebukuro West Gate Park. Set in Akihabara, Tokyo's electronics district, it follows six young people who each struggle socially and meet through a website called "A-Yui's Life Navigator": a designer with obsessive cleanliness and a fear of women; a genius writer who stutters and can only express himself fluently in front of a computer; an electronic musician who falls into periodic "freezes"; a hacker with social alienation who cannot bear light; a legal expert who has shut himself in at home for ten years and suffers from "home-return phobia" whenever he goes out; and a beautiful girl who works at a cosplay café and loves martial arts and camouflage clothing. Each carrying his or her own wounds, they meet in the holy land of otaku culture and decide to found a small IT company, Akihabara@DEEP, pooling their talents to develop what is billed as the world's first AI-powered search engine, CROOK, inadvertently setting off a revolution in the online world. As their fame grows, an IT industry giant reaches out with claws: corporate buyouts, technology theft, and malicious suppression follow one after another. Some chapters are narrated in the first person by the search engine CROOK, weaving together technological imagination, subcultural atmosphere, and the longing of marginalized youth to find their place, producing a "clear and transparent" urban youth fairy tale.

Editor's review

FAQ

About the author

Author

Ishida Ira is a contemporary Japanese novelist whose works are often categorized as foreign literature in the Chinese book market, with seven titles held in this collection. Based on the available materials, public information about his life, education, and awards is limited, so no speculation is made here. Judging from the works included, his subject matter is quite broad: there are series creations represented by the "Five Novels" collection, full-length works such as Promise, Rebirth, and Job Hunting Diary that revolve around human emotions and real-life circumstances, and titles like Mioka, The Sleepless Pearl, and Thumb Lover that focus on the emotional and coming-of-age struggles of urban youth. Overall, he excels at portraying ordinary people's loneliness, confusion, and mutual support in a plain style that is delicate yet warm, which has earned him considerable attention and affection from readers.
