Summary

Deep beneath the Pacific, at a depth of about one thousand feet, the U.S. Navy assembles a scientific expedition to investigate a massive unidentified hull. When divers descend, they discover it is a spacecraft from outer space. According to records aboard, it crashed there some three hundred years ago yet is almost perfectly intact. The most striking object inside the ship is a huge sphere about thirty feet in diameter. It is smooth and sealed, with no opening and no buttons—a silent artifact waiting for humans to interpret it. A team of scholars—psychologist Norman Johnson, mathematician Harry, biologist Beth, and others—is assembled in an underwater habitat, working in shifts in a sealed, dim, high-pressure environment to study the ship and the mysterious sphere. As exploration proceeds, strange things happen one after another: communications fail, equipment malfunctions, and enormous creatures seem to prowl the deep. The scientists gradually realize that the real threat does not come entirely from the unknown outside but is entangled with their own fears, private desires, and subconscious minds. Where the sphere came from, why it exists, and whether it should be opened become questions weighing on everyone's mind. The novel layers hard technical detail, the claustrophobic pressure of the deep sea, and psychological suspense, and in asking "are we ready to face the unknown," it pushes the dark side of human nature before the reader.

Editor's review

FAQ

About the author

Michael Crichton is an author whose works are often classified in the Chinese book market under science fiction and premium fiction. Public information is limited, and details such as his nationality and dates of birth and death are not currently available. Four of his works are included in the collection, among them Jurassic Park (two-volume edition), Jurassic Park, and Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World, as well as the thirty-two-volume Eternal Science Fiction Classics. These works suggest that his writing often centers on the complex consequences of technological development, combining scientific speculation with a tense narrative pace to create a cautionary reading experience. The Jurassic Park series has attracted wide attention for its imagination regarding genetic technology and humanity's attempt to control nature, making him one of the science fiction authors more familiar to Chinese readers.
