Summary

Hardcore Vol. 1 comes from Skybound, an imprint of Image Comics. The story concept was originally proposed by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri; in 2018 it was redeveloped into an ongoing series by writer Andy Diggle and artist Alessandro Vitti, and this volume is the opening issue #1 of that series. The story is set around a classified government program called "Project Hardcore": intelligence agencies target any ordinary person near a subject and use a sniper round to inject them with a "hardcore" implant containing nanotechnology; once the implant invades the central nervous system, an agent can take over the body from a "hardcore" pod, piloting a living person like a drone to carry out reconnaissance and assassinations that ordinary soldiers could never reach. Agent Drake is the finest "driver" in the system, able to complete missions coolly amid a strange body's pain, clumsiness, and loss of control, treating the controlled as expendable "meat puppets." But the rules contain a hard deadline: a single takeover cannot exceed 72 hours; if the agent does not log out in time, the implant degrades and the driver dies of brain damage. In issue #1, Drake is trapped inside a body during a mission, and Project Hardcore itself appears to have been hijacked; he must uncover the mastermind within 72 hours. When the enemy can change faces at will and hide in any body, the only thing he cannot be sure of is whom he can still trust. This volume is volume 1 of the series, collecting the opening content and laying the groundwork for the conspiracy and pursuit to come.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
