Summary

The easiest trap for spy fiction is to write the villains as stupid and slow, letting the protagonist sail through one obstacle after another. Liu Tianzhuang does the opposite: Teruo, the Japanese bureau chief, has an almost obsessive sensitivity to 'coincidences,' and his line 'Too many coincidences piled together are the enemy's biggest flaw' is both the enemy's operating principle and the alarm bell hanging over our underground agents day and night. When the opponent is meticulous and professional enough, every narrow escape carries real weight. Even rarer is the shift in perspective. From the very start the story does not intend to make readers guess 'who is the mole' but turns the camera behind the scenes: for a mole to survive safely, how many people must patch his holes and bear the cost where no one can see. The whole book thus reads like walking a tightrope; one detail slipping could drag down an entire intelligence line, and the pressure is almost constant. Nor does the novel make its heroes seamless. The characters each have their soft spots—family ties, calculations for power, greed and pride—and these 'flaws of the human heart' echo the flaws in intelligence work. After putting the book down, what lingers is not only the cleverness of the schemes but the balance that countless people strained to maintain in the dark during those stormy years.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
