Summary

"Ascending the Ancient Mound at Deng Village" is a work by the Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi.

Editor's review

"Ascending the Ancient Mound at Deng Village" is a poem by Bai Juyi, published here as a standalone volume by Bashu Press, offering readers a chance to read a single poem closely. Bai Juyi's poetry is known for its plain, fluent language and its closeness to everyday life, and a subject like climbing an ancient mound naturally carries reflections on time and mortality; though short, it rewards repeated reading. The advantage of a separate volume is that readers need not search through the vast collected works of Bai; around this one poem, with notes and background guidance, they can appreciate how Bai shifts between description, narrative, and reflection. It is better suited as a sample for close reading of classical poetry than as a substitute for the full range of Bai's work. If you are practicing line-by-line immersion and note-taking, or looking for a Tang poem of moderate length and accessible language as close-reading material for school students, this small book will serve; to understand Bai Juyi systematically, however, you still need an anthology or the complete works.

Who it's for

A good fit for

  • Lovers of classical poetry who want to close-read a single Tang poem
  • Language teachers and parents needing a short Tang poem as an example
  • Readers practicing line-by-line annotation and note-taking
  • Beginning readers interested in Bai Juyi's work

Not a good fit for

  • Readers hoping to read all of Bai Juyi's works systematically
  • Those who prefer long narratives or novel-style reading

Reading tips

  1. Read through once without the notes, jot down your first impressions, then go through the notes line by line.
  2. Read aloud two or three times, paying attention to the rhythm and pauses within Bai's plain language.
  3. Write a short hundred-character comment around keywords such as climbing, the ancient mound, and life and death to train close reading.
  4. If possible, read other poems by Bai Juyi on climbing or reflection alongside it and compare the approaches.

FAQ

Does this book contain only one poem?
From the available information, the book is organized around the single poem "Ascending the Ancient Mound at Deng Village" by Bai Juyi. Whether it includes notes, appreciation, or related appendices should be checked against the actual table of contents; look at the detail page before buying.
Is it suitable for school students?
Fairly suitable. Bai Juyi's language is plain, and this poem is not long, making it good introductory material for close reading of classical poetry. Younger students should read it with a teacher or parent and use the notes to understand the background.
Isn't a single-poem volume too thin?
The value of a single-poem volume lies in close reading, not completeness. It works well as a close-reading sample alongside an anthology of Bai Juyi or of Tang poetry, so you can go deep into one poem without losing sight of the whole.

Bai Juyi (772–846), courtesy name Letian and styled Xiangshan Jushi, was born in Xinzheng, Henan, with ancestral roots in Taiyuan. A leading Tang dynasty realist poet, he championed the New Yuefu movement together with Yuan Zhen, and the two were known as "Yuan-Bai"; he is also paired with Liu Yuxi as "Liu-Bai." Bai Juyi served as a Hanlin academician and Left Remonstrator, among other posts. His wide-ranging work includes satirical poems on the hardships of ordinary people and long narrative and lyrical songs. Masterpieces such as "Song of Everlasting Sorrow," "Song of the Pipa," and "The Charcoal Seller" are noted for their plain, natural language and sincere feeling, and have exerted a lasting influence on later poetry. His Bai Shi Changqing Collection survives, and this library holds 77 of his works, including poems, prose collections, and verse groups such as Poems from Qin and Spring by the Xunyang River, commonly classed under ancient poetry, classic works, and inspirational growth.
