The Mad Whisperer

The Mad Whisperer is a long suspense and adventure novel by the Xinjiang web novelist Yu Songshu (real name Yin Min), serialized from 2018 on platforms such as Huoxing Fiction and Shuqi Fiction and completed in June 2019; it runs to 497 chapters and about 1.087 million characters. The protagonist is the renowned photographer Tang Xunying, who is drawn by a letter of unknown origin into a journey to the Altai region in search of a gold mine. Once the group sets out, Tang Xunying discovers that its members come from all walks of life and harbor suspicions and hidden motives. Deep in the no-man's-land, the party faces not only harsh nature but a series of inexplicable supernatural phenomena and relentless tests of human nature. The narrative is driven by three questions—what is this gold-mine journey really for, do gods and demons actually exist, and am I going mad—and blends tomb-raiding, treasure-hunting, adventure, and thriller elements with the landscapes and local culture of the Altai region. The author excels at nuanced psychological description and colloquial narration, building suspense on the uncertainty of the narrator's mental state, hence the title The Mad Whisperer. It is one of Yu Songshu's representative works after Tomb-Raiding Memories and was named to Huoxing Fiction's 2018 annual suspense list, regarded as one of the year's top ten suspense-adventure novels. Note that the book was distributed mainly through online platforms, and no confirmed mainland print edition has been identified.
