Summary

The King (Japanese original: Aru Kingu) is a surreal suspense novel by Kotaro Isaka, translated into Chinese by Yuan Bin and part of the New Classics Kotaro Isaka series. The novel follows the growth of Yamada, an extraordinarily gifted athlete: he has outstanding athletic ability and strong willpower, and his parents are willing to sacrifice everything to protect his talent, even at the cost of being suspected of murder. As Yamada grows day by day and his strength becomes increasingly evident, he attracts more and more jealousy. Will he become a legendary figure, or will he be swallowed by the surging undercurrent? A match that will decide his fate arrives as if by destiny. The work uses multiple perspectives and a structure that loops from beginning to end, asking through almost incredible plot: if an extremely outstanding person appears among those around you, will people help him succeed or destroy him? The book also contains cryptic settings such as "Kanagawa Prefecture" and "King of Sendai," exploring, beyond the suspense, the tension between genius and the group, mediocrity and order. The book is short and compact, with a fast pace and a lingering ending; it is one of Isaka's colder, more satirical works.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ

About the author

Kotaro Isaka Author · Japanese · 1971

Kotaro Isaka, born in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, in 1971 and a graduate of the Faculty of Law at Tohoku University, is one of the most distinctive contemporary Japanese novelists. In 1996 he won a honorable mention in the Suntory Mystery Fiction Award for The Annoying Villains, and he made his debut in 2000 with The Audubon's Prayer; he has since been shortlisted for the Naoki Prize several times. His work is often classified as mystery and suspense, yet it does not adhere to the conventional puzzle-solving framework, blending the surreal and a light humor into crime and suspense, with characters who carry warmth and goodwill through absurd situations. The collection includes 19 of his works, among them Golden Slumber, The Precision of the Dead, Gravity's Clown, Lush Life, 777, Pepper's Ghost, The Duck and the Wild Duck's Coin-Operated Locker, One Punk Saves the Earth, and Why Don't You Move to Mars?, as well as several multi-volume complete collections.
