Hunting the Ming

Hunting the Ming is a historical time-travel novel by the web author Qingtong Rentou. It was serialized on Qidian from August 2008 and completed in March 2009, totaling about 1.07 million characters and 285 chapters. The title means 'hunting the Ming,' and the author describes the theme as 'The Ming has lost its deer, and heroes hunt it together. This is a story of a modern man who travels back to the last two years of the Ming dynasty. This is a stage for the strong.' The story begins around the fourteenth year of the Chongzhen reign: the Central Plains suffer unending famine and heavy taxes and corvée, Li Zicheng's forces range across Henan, Qing armies beyond the pass repeatedly break through the border, and court factional strife and fiscal crisis pile up layer upon layer. The protagonist Wang Youcai—a humble man of the streets—is an ordinary person who is drawn into this great era by the petty business of daily survival, clawing his way up from the lowest ranks of military households and grooms. He survives and establishes himself among Ming troops, peasant armies, the military groups beyond the pass, and the aftershocks of old wars in the Korean direction, gradually accumulating strength through his knowledge of where history is heading and through solid, practical management, until he finds his place in the collapse of the Chongzhen court's 'last two years.' The book takes late Ming military conflict and regime change as its main line, focusing on military systems, grain and pay, intelligence, and tactical maneuvering rather than supernatural powers or magic. Through the protagonist's rise from the bottom, it presents the interaction between individual fate and the tide of the times, and the human choices made by different camps under the logic of power.
