Summary

If you are tired of detective stories built on a genius's flash of insight, The Manhunt offers another answer: rely on the scene, on evidence, on repeated interviews and deductions. Yue Yong has long written crime fiction, and his detectives are not omnipotent geniuses but ordinary people who get tired, make misjudgments, and must answer for the pressure to close cases—which makes the characters credible. Each of the four cases has a different hook: a body thrown from a train, zombie-like biting, late-night peeping, a sudden death in a taxi. The mysteries carry a touch of the sensational, but their solutions rest on real ground—demolition, child trafficking, marriage as a transaction, online video extortion—words seen in the news, twisted by the author into motives for crime. With common knowledge of criminal investigation, forensics, and criminal psychology woven in, the reading offers both the engagement of deduction and a chill that "the case happened in the neighborhood next door." At about 180,000 words with a clear four-volume structure, it suits commuter or bedtime reading volume by volume; timid readers should note that some crime-scene descriptions are graphic, so daytime reading is advised. As the opening of a trilogy, this volume also establishes the relationships among Long Yi's team, making the second book and The Finale more coherent to read afterward.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
