Summary

Fox Kill is a completed long-form folk horror novel by the web author Jiezi Xumi Sanhu, with a carefully edited version circulating online. The story begins with a decaying rural haunted house: over several years, the homeowner's family dies one after another in bizarre ways; afterward, chickens and dogs vanish upon entering, and anyone who dares spend the night in the courtyard falls ill with a strange disease. Starting from the ordeal of Zhang Lianyi and his family, the narrative unfolds along two threads: one is the Zhang family's generations-old feud with the white fox and the old eagle, their guardian spirits; the other is an ancient tale from the Spring and Autumn period in the state of Yue—the doomed love between the self-sealed nine-tailed fox Fengzhu and the Yue archery god Chen Yin. A small bronze figurine enshrined in the home serves both as a token of past love and as the trigger for a vengeful spirit's awakening. As the figurine is roused, a grudge dormant for a thousand years begins to encroach upon reality: the wife turns into another person at midnight, relatives die violent deaths in succession, and on the village wasteland, weasels, yellow weasels, badgers, and the old eagle gather. The yin-yang master Zhou Changgong, along with possessed mediums and ghost cultivators, make their entrances one after another. The book weaves together haunted houses, ancient tombs, possessed mediums, yin-yang dragon-tiger rites, ghost paintings, demonic mirrors, and the legend of the Eastern King into a dazzling journey where humans and ghosts are hard to tell apart and gods and demons mingle—Chen Yin and Fengzhu, to protect each other, battle the Yu brothers and the old grudge of the Eagle King for a thousand years; Zhang Lianyi, drawn into this web of cause and effect, is pushed by each death toward a fate he cannot control. The story is anchored in folk horror, yet it is not merely about ghosts: it writes of the inescapable traps wrought by human greed, obsession, and love and hate.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
