Summary

Published in 1942, Candle Embers is a novel by the Hungarian writer Sándor Márai and one of his most widely read and most representative works. The story unfolds in a silent, empty manor: General Henrik receives a rare visitor—his former closest friend Konrad, whom he has not seen for forty-one years. In the dim drawing room, candlelight and firelight flicker as the two aging friends sit facing each other over candles and talk through the night. The General recalls their boyhood military academy, manor dinners, four-hand piano pieces by Chopin, an unusual hunt and a tropical escape, and through these memories reexamines a past woven from love, friendship, loyalty and betrayal: his wife Krisztina is long dead, and behind Konrad's departure lies a secret that can never be fully confirmed. The novel consists almost entirely of the General's monologue and questioning; Konrad answers with silence, and the truth remains blurred and unrecoverable in the flickering candlelight. In prose as somber as a dirge, Márai mourns the vanished imperial age and the aristocratic integrity and gentlemanly friendship that dissolved with it, gathering the sorrow of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's decline and the wavering of human hearts amid the collapse of world order into a single night's conversation.

Editor's review

Who it's for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
