Spirit Ring

Spirit Ring is a model specimen of the classic Qidian formula around 2010: “loser turnaround + ring grandpa + level-up and monster-fighting.” Its opening is not flashy: a deserted courtyard in the Xia family of Yushui City, a boy who has failed to open a single meridian in ten years, and the memorial tablet of a mother rejected by the clan—the conflict is set out cleanly. Then the soul of the Sacred Emperor awakens in the ancestral black ring, supplying both the “cheat” and the “mentor” in one go, and establishing the book's sense of purpose: to fight from the family arena all the way to the Holy Hall, the Holy Temple, and the Sacred Emperor. At 3.38 million characters and 1,204 chapters, the pacing is brisk. Arena matches, pill concoction, auctions, academy tournaments, and secret-realm treasure hunts are packed almost back to back as gratification beats. It works well as a long diversion in which you simply watch the protagonist win his way forward. A caveat: characterization in this old-school power fantasy is functional. Female characters and villains read as clearly dated today, and most supporting characters exist to serve the protagonist's growth. If you are reading a widely circulated “meticulously proofread” TXT edition, check whether the chapters are complete; chapter counts and formatting vary considerably between sources.
