Fireworks Disciple

Fireworks Disciple is an early xianxia novel by web author Lazy Bird, completed on Qidian Chinese Network on August 31, 2011. It runs about 2.1 million characters in over 700 chapters. The protagonist, Wu Yan, is a low-tier cultivator with ordinary aptitude and no background. After many twists and turns he joins the Yunmeng Sect, only to be assigned the identity of a "fireworks disciple"—in the secular world this amounts to a menial laborer, and within the sect it means being ordered around by others. Wu Yan mines and refines materials in the ore veins of the outer nine peaks of the Yunmeng Sect; his Qi Refining cultivation stalls for years, and he must also deal with fellow disciples who skim his spirit stones and assign him tasks at will. With scarce resources and his lowly status compounding each other, he has no choice but to change tack, seeking a way out through crafts such as talisman-making and artifact refining: improving talisman paper, creating practical talisman methods of his own, and in his spare time refining artifacts and identifying herbs to supplement his cultivation. The novel advances along the thread of "mining menial—talisman craftsman—artifact-refining cultivator," linking sect missions, competitions, ore-vein disputes, secret-realm exploration, star-domain journeys, and other plotlines. Built on a classical cultivation framework, the work keeps its perspective close to low-tier cultivators, who gradually gain a foothold through craftsmanship, temperament, and calculation; the world map also keeps expanding from the mountain gate to the star domains. It is one of the representative works of Lazy Bird's early xianxia writing.
