Subtext

Subtext is a short-story collection by the writer Lao Ma (real name Ma Junjie), published by Tianjin People's Publishing House in 2011, gathering many short works he wrote over the years. The book draws on every layer of contemporary Chinese society—officialdom, universities, the countryside, and ordinary city life—and its characters range from high officials and professors to ordinary citizens and poor rural neighbors, forming a motley and vivid panorama. Lao Ma excels at pushing familiar everyday scenes to the extreme of absurdity through exaggeration, distortion, and the grotesque, thereby highlighting the essence of things and the most striking traits of his characters. His fiction wraps serious social content in a comic shell, planting questions about real-world paradoxes among the jokes and gags; in style it combines something of Chekhov's "laughter through tears" with Lu Xun's biting sarcasm.
