King of the Bay Area

King of the Bay Area is a sports-competition novel by the web novelist Moyan Shaonian, serialized on Qidian from December 2017 to its completion in March 2023, running over 1,800 chapters and roughly 5.7 million characters. The story turns to American football, a sport relatively unfamiliar to domestic readers: the protagonist, Lu Ke, is a Chinese American player who, because of racial prejudice and limited natural physical gifts, keeps hitting the wall at the threshold of the professional league, dismissed as "smart and savvy but lacking talent," and can only start from the most marginal position. By chance he obtains a "Football Superstar System," which through missions and rewards helps him strengthen his tactical understanding and physical conditioning, gradually shoring up his weaknesses. The story follows his athletic career: from an unnoticed practice-squad player in college football, he uses his tactical study and on-field judgment to gradually earn playing time, goes through the key battle of the Rose Bowl, endures the twists of the professional draft, and finally reaches the professional field, taking the quarterback position known as "the team's brain," answering doubts with one key pass after another and setting his sights on the ultimate stage of the Super Bowl. Competition is the main thread throughout, interspersed with a great deal of popular-science material on rules, formations, tactics, and team operations; combining passionate growth with sports knowledge, it is a massive, solidly paced work of football fiction.
