Summary

The Battle of the Xiang River is a military novel by Li Ruqing, one of his "War Tragedy Trilogy" (alongside The Wannan Incident and Blood and Yellow Sand), first published in the 1990s; this edition is a newly revised edition in the People's Literature Publishing House's "Li Ruqing War Classics Series." The novel centers on the Xiang River Campaign during the Red Army's Long March from late November to early December 1934: the Central Red Army, burdened by its "grand relocation" of pots and pans, advanced slowly westward and was encircled and intercepted by 300,000 Nationalist troops on both banks of the Xiang River; the Red First Army Corps, the Red Third Army Corps, and the Red Fifth Division held firm at blocking positions at Jiaoshanpu, Guanghuapu, and Xinxu, covering the crossing of the Central Column. The campaign ended in terrible carnage: the Red Army shrank from more than 86,000 at the start to just over 30,000; the Red Eighth Army Corps, the 18th Regiment of the Sixth Division of the Red Third Army Corps, and the 34th Division of the Red Fifth Army Corps were almost entirely annihilated, and Chen Shuxiang, commander of the 34th Division, committed suicide by cutting out his own intestines after being captured. The author does not stop at battlefield description but employs a narrative structure that interweaves past and present, braiding the bloody battle of the Xiang River with the Ningdu Conference of 1932, the land law and the "discussion of the Zhouyi" at Zhugou Village in Yudu in 1934, the difficult handling of the units left behind in the Soviet area, and the plotting of Chiang Kai-shek with German advisers von Seeckt and Donald in the Nanchang field headquarters, interrogating the roots of the "grand relocation" march and the errors of military decision-making, reflecting on the losses inflicted on the Red Army by the dogmatist line, and, through Mao Zedong's reflections on a stretcher, laying the groundwork for the later Tongdao diversion and the Zunyi Conference. The book is at once a battlefield panorama of blood and flesh and a heavy volume on decision-making, responsibility, and historical reflection.

Editor's review

FAQ
