The Wanderer's Jianghu

The Wandering Swordsman is a lengthy traditional wuxia novel by Shu Zhiqi, an early online writer. Set in the early years of the Ming Dynasty, shortly after the end of the Jingnan Campaign, the story unfolds in a realm where great upheaval has only just subsided and the imperial court remains unstable. The Mongol royal house still harbors ambitions to return to the Central Plains, while Japan and Korea are likewise restless. The Qinghe Sword Sect and the Demonic Heaven Holy Cult are locked in relentless battle for supremacy in the martial world, and foreign forces seize the opportunity to encroach. The fledgling Ming Dynasty stands on the brink of collapse.

The protagonist, Huang Yuxiang, nicknamed "the Wandering Swordsman," is twenty-two years old, free-spirited and unrestrained in nature, and indifferent to conventional propriety. Some despise him for his lustfulness, others envy his constant romantic encounters, and still others praise him for stepping forward in defense of home and country when duty calls. He practices the Baopu Longevity Art and wields a sword. Amid sect strife, court turmoil, and foreign invasion, he hones his skills through repeated trials: he forms romantic bonds with women of diverse backgrounds, including Shan Yuying and Zhang Mengxin, maneuvers and contends with various factions, and repeatedly faces the choice between living by his passions and avenging wrongs, on the one hand, and defending his homeland, on the other.

The novel poses its own recurring question: "Is he a libertine or a lecher, a savior or a villain?"—and leaves the verdict to later generations. Its prose carries the patriotic fervor characteristic of Jin Yong and the sweeping martial-world atmosphere of Huang Yi, while also featuring the steamy passages and multi-heroine romance lines typical of early online fiction, ultimately arriving at a happy ending in which the hero retires from the martial world. As a widely circulated wuxia epic from the early days of online literature, it is one of the representative works for understanding the "wandering hero" genre as it existed in its time.
