Summary

Chronicles in the Mud is a record of the life of an ordinary middle-aged woman. In the winter of 2020, Yun Siduo began writing on a diary website, using words to capture the flow of her everyday life and the inexpressible feelings within, faithfully recording life as it is. The book comprises 415 entries selected from five years of continuous daily writing—nearly 200,000 words—edited and compiled by Duku.

In the kitchen at dawn, in bed late at night, on the bus during her commute, in the gaps between busy work, she writes word by word with rare candor, sincerity, and sensitivity, recording the hardships and perils, the difficulties and indignities, the struggles and powerlessness of life, as well as every fine rain and gentle breeze and every stormy wave within her heart. Many things once overlooked, forgotten, or invisible are brought into view through her recording and telling.

She is a mother, a daughter, a lover, and also a friend, colleague, neighbor—the little girl whose childhood name her parents still call, the weary middle-aged person who passes you by on the commute. The book touches on loneliness in marriage, the panic of child-rearing, financial hardship, and career upheavals, and also records dreams, old memories, and small warmth. She strives to salvage herself from the mud of life, just like you and me. For everyone who is in the mud and still striving to live.

Editor's review

FAQ
