The Wolf's Journey

The Wolf's Journey is a historical wuxia novel by Yunxiao Tiandao. It began serialization on Qidian in 2014 and was completed in 2017, totaling roughly 5.01 million characters. The story is set during the Jiajing reign of the Ming dynasty: the Mongols loom in the north, Japanese pirates raid the southeast from time to time, and corruption runs rampant among officials. The emperor devotes himself to Daoist immortality practices, employs the Yan Song faction to dominate the court, and secretly dispatches the Embroidered Uniform Guard to stir up the martial world; the thousand-year struggle between good and evil has reached the point where it must be settled. The protagonist, Li Cangxing, was once the senior disciple training on Wudang Mountain, exceptionally gifted and with real potential to become a grandmaster. But he is caught up in a power struggle within his sect, suffers a sudden catastrophe, loses his family, and from then on wanders the world under the code name "Heavenly Wolf," becoming a feared assassin of the Embroidered Uniform Guard. The novel opens with reverse chronology, first presenting a weathered martial wanderer of mysterious origins, then tracing how he went from Wudang disciple to lone wolf. The story weaves together the mysterious sect of the northern desert, the treasure of the Japanese pirates in the southeast, strange sorcery in Miao territory, struggles for supremacy in the Central Plains, and a thousand-year-old tomb from the Han dynasty, layer by layer revealing a shocking secret forty years in the making. The protagonist moves from the martial world into the court and the frontier, pacifying the Mongols, driving out the pirates, removing treacherous ministers, and overthrowing a foolish emperor, making his choices between love and hatred, and between family and country. The writing is solid and the foreshadowing dense, with both mystery and martial-world atmosphere; it is regarded as one of the representative web wuxia works that combine a sense of history with a sense of design.
