Can Slay

Remnant Slaughter is a classical xianxia novel by Canying Liuli, serialized on Zongheng Chinese Network since 2012. The complete work comprises four hundred and ninety-nine chapters, with the final chapter titled "Canying Liuli (End)." Set against a world in turmoil, the story opens with "Birth in Jinling": Huangfu Yuran, the young son of the Huangfu family in Jiangnan, is born beneath an omen of a descending dragon head and proclaimed a divine body by birth, prompting orthodox and unorthodox factions alike to contend for claim over him. At the Huangfu family's full-month banquet, the various forces clash, then move the confrontation to Yandang Mountain ("Orthodox and Unorthodox in Standoff," "Battle at Yandang"), where they ultimately agree that the Xiaoyao Sect shall raise him in trust. Entering Xiaoyao, Yuran accidentally consumes a vermilion fruit, receives instruction from his master, and begins cultivation by seeking qi in his dantian; along the way he faces provocation from senior disciples, the martial tournament arena, training expeditions, battles with spirit beasts in the Hundred Thousand Mountains, and befriends companions including Lengfeng Lingxue and Lengyue Lingyu. As he comes of age, he is drawn into the resurgence of the demonic sects, the feud between the Puppet Sect and the Ghost Sect, and the larger maelstrom of a fractured realm and the unification of the empire, while wrestling with the pull between falling into demonic ways and holding fast to himself. In the final "Shattering the Void" section, Huangfu Yuran leaves the cultivation world, each character finds their own ending, and the conflicts among the immortal, nether, and Buddhist realms temporarily subside. With "ruling the world, raising a sword to ask of love" as its backbone, the novel portrays the cruelty of the cultivation world and the complexity of human nature, its main thread being revenge, growth, and self-redemption.
