Summary

Carve the Mark is a science-fiction novel by American author Veronica Roth, following her Divergent series. Published in English under the title Carve the Mark, it was brought to Chinese readers in 2017 by Tiandi Publishing House in a translation by Wu Hua. The story unfolds in a galaxy of nine nations: driven by the current, everyone in the galaxy possesses a unique gift. The Shotet and Thuvhe peoples share one planet and hate each other. Ryzek Noavek, the Shotet ruler, is bound by a fate that says he will yield to the Benesit family; to overturn that fate, he abducts Thuvhe's rising oracle and her brother Akos, hoping to build an independent regime and dominate the galaxy. Cyra is Ryzek's sister; her gift lets her inflict unbearable pain through touch, while she herself endures exactly the same pain, and her brother uses her as a tool of rule and intimidation. Akos comes from the cold nation of Thuvhe; his father is a farmer and his mother an oracle. Gentle by nature and endlessly loyal to his family, he is held under house arrest in the Shotet court and longs to free his brother. When Akos is thrust into Cyra's world as her fated servant, he becomes the only person in the galaxy who can touch her without causing agony, and the two, from enemy houses, come to rely on each other as they struggle between power, hatred, and a predetermined fate. This is the first volume of the series, followed by Carve the Mark 2.

Editor's review

Who it's for

A good fit for

Not a good fit for

Reading tips

FAQ
