Summary

Many readers were introduced to the "East-meets-West worldbuilding collision" through works like Lord of the Mysteries and Release That Witch, but as early as 2003, Ren Yuan had already walked this path with Swords Drawn, Horses Charged. It is not a finely polished contemporary web novel, but it is a sample for understanding how Chinese web literature got its start: an Eastern martial artist carrying extreme-cold dark iron falls into a continent of magic, elves, and guilds, and fights forbidden spells and knight orders with Tai Chi principles and martial-world rules. What makes this book most worth reading is that it is not content with mere face-slapping satisfaction. What Wang Feng truly wants is to transplant the order of the "martial world" into another realm: taking disciples, founding sects, persuading the military, and using the imperial court's power to promote his philosophy, changing the rules step by step rather than simply defeating enemies one by one. The author Ren Yuan came from a Tsinghua engineering background, and his preference for logic and research is already evident in this book; he also insists on the protagonist's emotional constancy, avoiding the multiple-wives formula. To be candid, its sense of its era is obvious: mixed worldbuilding, stereotyped villains, and prose less mature than his later works Yuan Long and Divine Artisan, with the first few dozen chapters pacing slowly. But if you want to know how the "national martial arts versus magic" trope was first seriously written, or want to fill in a piece of reading history from Qidian's early VIP paid era, this book deserves a place on your list.

Editor's review

Reading tips

FAQ
